About Me

Barbara Buford

Artist

I have always had a need to create, and using color has been my preferred language. After an injury at a young age, my eyesight was impaired, especially my depth perception. My eyesight developed using color intensity as my scale for depth perception, giving me my Superpower!

I naturally gravitated to creative employment, and have also shown and sold my art for decades now. I define “art” as any form of expression which relays emotion. Original art in any form holds the essence of the maker. That is the excitement that you feel at a concert, exhibition, or show. Mass produced art never quite achieves that intimate relationship; it falls flat without that “soul.” Look at your environment and feel the things in life that are handmade and have that personal influence.

I have a gift of creativity, and that allows me to share my spirit and soul. I certainly hope it lights a fire in others! My art is intended to be accessible and inspiring, and it is that relationship with the viewer that motivates me.

Biography

Barbara Buford’s innate creativity has always been the backbone of her life. Even before leaving grammar school, she had already started three different creative enterprises! She went on to major in Art at Maine South High School in Park Ridge, Illinois before earning a BFA in Painting and Drawing from Stephen’s College in Columbia, Missouri. After Graduation, Barb took to the road as a roving artist, often traveling with a duffel of clothes, a portfolio of artworks, and a trunk of paints. She can now claim more than forty different addresses as she followed her interests and occupations around the country.

Among the many highlights of her employment, Barb was a Visual Merchandiser for several noted companies, and her own, in several states and Europe. While still in her twenties, she traveled to Europe as a professional Visual Designer for two consecutive years, before returning to the States to continue that career in Greater Chicago, St Louis, and Atlanta. Her need for an even more creative form of employment also led her to painting Custom Faux Finishes for both Commercial and Residential clients in Chicago, Connecticut, and New York. Whenever time allowed, Barb continued to nurture her own personal art as well.

2010 found Barb living in Atlanta and working as an Interior Designer in Retail Furniture. It was there that she decided to “take the plunge” and make a career of producing and selling the art that she so loved. She is thankful for all of the encouragement, love, and support from her many friends, family, and collectors that continues to this day. After selling more that a hundred paintings primarily through Social Media connections, she eagerly welcomes an online store as well. Barb now lives in a loft in Elgin, Illinois, and is happy to say that she works on her art daily.
